Humanistic coaching

Omar offers humanistic coaching to clients who wish to engage in self-exploration through conversations with a coach who is familiar with the classic humanist tradition as advanced in the early part of the 20th century in particular by Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Rollo May. Humanistic coaching can take a number of different forms, ranging from a focus on self-development and increased self-insight/self-acceptance/self-actualisation to an examination or reappraisal of one's value system and spiritual growth.

Depending on the client's desired goals and preferences, the sessions might be more practical (e.g., dealing constructively with particular challenging situations in one's life) or more philosophical/existential (e.g., re-examining one's true identify and purpose in life).

Themes that often arise in these sessions include what our notions of authenticity are, and to what extent we can become and remain authentic even during external pressures to compromise our true nature. We try to identify the elements in our lives that give us a sense of fulfilment, and develop new ways of relating to these elements. We also try to identify the more destructive forces that on the surface might seem innocuous but fatigue us in certain ways. The overriding aim is often to develop new habits that encourage our growth and development in all aspects of our lives.

Performance coaching

In these sessions, the focus will be on exploring with the clients the ways in which they can optimise their performance within a given field. Over the years, Omar has worked with elite musicians, dancers, artists, academics, and other professionals who have been interesting in identifying patterns in their working styles, and develop strategies to work more efficiently and purposefully towards set goals.

Some of the recurring themes that arise in these sessions are how to achieve and maintain states of flow that are conducive to a more profound experience during both practice and performance. Another aspect that we often work on is how we are emotionally connected to our work, and an exploration of this relationship often results in healthier ways of working and thinking about one's work. The aim is often to establish or re-establish a healthy and constructive relationship with our work, whatever its nature.

Omar has conducted research and published articles on emotional and personality-related predictors of creativity and performance. In the coaching sessions, we often talk about the ways in which our personality traits interact with circumstances to produce certain performance-related outcomes. Mindfulness-based exercises are often employed to facilitate deeper insights into the client's performance. The focus may be on performance optimisation, productivity, or achieving a healthier work-life balance.

Coaching sessions usually take place once a week over eight weeks or longer. A one-hour session is £60. If you are interested in booking a session, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.

Some of the principles underlying the coaching sessions are elaborated upon in the lecture below.

Psychology tuition

Omar offers private tuition for university students at all levels from undergraduates to doctoral level candidates, in most aspects of research design, methodology, theory development, data analysis (both quantitative using SPSS and qualitative using thematic analysis and similar techniques), and academic report/dissertation writing.

More specifically, he can also assist in designing experiments and clinical trials in various areas of health and clinical psychology, as well as social psychology experiments in attitudes, behaviour, and the psychology of religion, mindfulness, and existentialism.

Guidance can also be provided on how to write up an article for publication. Students or recent graduates who wish to write up their dissertations as journal publications can be guided in re-writing each section as per specific journal requirements. Assistance can also be provided in selecting a suitable journal for a given study or sets of studies, and likewise for conceptual/theoretical articles.

Corporate consultancy

With his experience in consulting organisations, government departments, and television networks, Omar offers a corporate consultancy service in areas of work-related stress, staff growth and development initiatives, identity and diversity in organisational culture, job satisfaction, team cohesion, and related areas. The aim may be to improve the work-life balance of staff, reduce work-related stress, increase the team collaborative spirit, increase intrinsic motivation, increase productivity, or something else related to the psychological working conditions of staff.

The consultancy will be empirically and theoretically driven with recommendations based on high-quality evidence. If a budget is available for primary data collection specifically for the project, we will be able to use first-hand evidence to provide custom-made recommendations.

Rates start from £150 per hour. Please use the form  below to book a preliminary consultation.
