Omar's music background is in Indian classical music (Hindustani style) in which he received his preliminary training from Ranbir Singh Ji (Taus and Dilruba player based in India) and continues to learn from Surjeet Singh Ji (Sarangi player based in London) from whom he has been learning since 2005.

Apart from playing the instruments of dilruba, esraj, taus, and taar shehnai, he also has experience in directing Indian music ensembles at different universities, and has taught Indian classical music theory, performance, and improvisation.

He has also performed as a vocalist in ensembles, and has performed as a soloist dilruba/taus player since 2008 (venues include Winstanley Theatre in Trinity College at Cambridge, The Walter Roy Theatre in Norwich, Michael Tippett Centre at Bath Spa University, and the Rotunda Hall at the University of Hertfordshire).

Omar composes raag-based ghazals , particularly to the poetry of Mirza Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Saghar Siddiqui, and Zaheen Shah Taji. Some of these ghazals have already been released on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, and YouTube. Others are currently being produced in ongoing collaboration with musicians from London, India, and Pakistan.
